Day 12 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-14

Happy Bastille Day! (July 14). Anyway, today would be filled with a lot of driving, since we are now headed to the east coast of Newfoundland. There is a tiny village called Tilt Cove, population maybe a dozen, whose history is shrouded with mining disasters and shipwrecks. It was once a thriving fishing center as

Day 11 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-13

Today is mostly a travel day, so this blog entry will necessarily be abbreviated. While we were working our way north, up the west coast of Newfoundland, we had previously visited the area around New Ferolle Lighthouse, where there were dozens of Malaxis brachypoda or White Adder’s-mouth orchid in bud. I had hoped that four

Day 10 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-12

We actually had rain last night, the first rain of our trip. It was still misting a bit when we ate breakfast, but it cleared up soon after. We have been blessed with great weather. Last night at supper with Diane and Paul, we decided to meet back up at Pistolet Bay Provincial Park Campground

Day 8-9 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-10,11

If you are wondering what happened to Day 8, we spent the day taking the short ferry ride from St. Barbe, Newfoundland to Blanc Sablon, Quebec. From there we drove a short distance into Labrador. Walter had not been to Quebec and neither of us had been to Labrador. Once landed, we drove a couple

Day 7 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-09

We had several places on our agenda to visit today: Table Point Ecological Reserve (near Bellburns), Philips Garden Trail (near Port au Choix), and New Ferolle Peninsula Lighthouse (near New Ferolle). Each of these places provide distinctly different habitats, and thus host different orchid species. The first of these places is Table Point Ecological Reserve.

Day 6 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-08

Our North Carolina friends, Neil Jacobs and Jen Modliszewski, made a visit to a place called Baker’s Brook Bog in July of 2012. It’s a large raised bog situated about 10 km (6 miles) north of Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland. This is a fairly unknown bog, but it has relatively easy access from the main highway. Apparently,

Day 5 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-07

We spent three days in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland. Although there were lots of historical places to visit as well as an active lighthouse, my main interest was Rocky Harbour Bog. This is a huge bog system about a mile south of town. Access is problematic unless you have a GPS reading, since there is nothing

Day 4 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-06

On this day, we had made prior plans to meet local residents Andrus Voitk and his wife Maria at the Lomond River Trail parking lot in Gros Morne National Park. Andrus and Maria wrote the definitive book on Newfoundland orchids called, Orchids on the Rock: The Wild Orchids of Newfoundland. It is a wonderfully illustrated

Day 3 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-05

This is a two-part entry, detailing our visits first to Parc Boutte du Cap and then to a relatively unknown bog that I’ll call “Kippens Bog”, since it just east of the village of Kippens. We arrived at the Felix Bed & Breakfast in early evening. After Walter and Chris and I unpacked our belongings,

Day 2 — Orchids on the “Rock” — Newfoundland — 2013-07-04

Today, we would be leaving Channel-Port aux Basques and heading up the west coast of Newfoundland with our first stop at J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park. We woke early and noticed a pretty nice sunrise out of our hotel window: Of course, Edna’s Road Bog was on the way, so we had to make a short
